Reflection on formal presentation

Reflection on Abdulla’s presentation
Date: 17.05.2012

Time: 1100

Venue: W103

Topic: bullying in schools

Abdulla introduced the presentation by asking the audience what they understood by bullying. He then talked about different types of bullying, e.g. physical, verbal, cyber etc.

The role of parenting in combating bullying was discussed, as was the responsibility of the media as a cause of bullying. Gang membership and violence were also covered.

Body language and eye contact were excellent. Abdulla had the attention of the audience throughout; they showed considerable interest and asked many questions which Abdulla answered as he went along.

Slides were colourful and informative. The text on the slides was minimal and almost 100% accurate. The one minor blip was solution instead of solutions.

There was an extended, lively discussion after the presentation on the role of the media in general in encouraging bullying behavior and of the WWE’s BA star programme in combating it.
What new did I learn? I learnt about 2 specific cases of bullying:

1.
The case of Loujain Hussain here in the UAE. I had already read about this case, but I got further details of its causes & consequences.
2.
The case of Phoebe Prince, who was driven to suicide by school bullying. It was a shocking case of a young girl hanging herself because she was bullied.

Overall, a well-presented , lively, entertaining & enjoyable session.
